Indulgences Redux

Looks like we need another Luther. As the Pharisees said, more rightly than they knew, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?"

Gay, thats what happens when you give men too much power in the church.

Are you really surprised that the Pope is still Catholic?

But you do seem to get some important facts wrong. Namely, Catholics don't claim indulgences forgive sins.

And there is that troubling passage you seem to have forgotten "Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." It, of course, don't imply the Catholic position, but it does kinda undermine your objection to it.

If it says, "if you dont forgive them, they arent forgiven" woulnt that just state, that "they havent been forgiven by you, but have been by God" so forgive them so you dont remain bitter and take Gods side of forgiveness?

In the context, no.

Matt,

I hadn't thought of that passage, and you bringing it up causes me to reconsider the breadth of my views on these things. The Catholic view, however, that the power to forgive has been conferred on the priesthood is a gross overspecification.

Yeah, it might be. I don't think that Catholics would (or at least should) try and use that passage to prove their practices, rather they think that that passage is a reference to their practice.

Peace,

Matt
